Brussels, Belgium – 21 May 2024

During the CPDP.ai 2024 opening night, the Center for AI and Digital Policy Europe proudly presented the AI Policy Leader Awards to distinguished individuals and organisations. These awards recognise those who have made significant contributions to defending fundamental rights, upholding the rule of law, and promoting democratic values in the realm of artificial intelligence policy.

AI Policy Leader in Government: The Italian Data Protection Authority, represented by Guido Scorza, received the award for its pioneering role in initiating the world’s first investigation into OpenAI. This groundbreaking effort highlights the importance of regulatory oversight in the development and deployment of AI technologies, ensuring that these innovations respect and protect individual rights and privacy.

AI Policy Leader in Academia: Gianclaudio Malgieri and Alessandro Mantelero were honored for their dedication to integrating human rights impact assessments into AI governance. Their academic contributions have been instrumental in shaping policies that prioritize ethical considerations and the protection of human rights in the deployment of AI systems.

AI Policy Leader in Civil Society: European Digital Rights (EDRi) was recognized for its leadership of the ReclaimYourFace campaign. This initiative has been pivotal in advocating for restrictions on the use of remote biometric identification technologies within the EU AI Act, aiming to safeguard privacy and prevent surveillance abuses.

AI Policy Leader in Business: Luca Bertuzzi was awarded for his exceptional work in providing comprehensive reporting on AI policy. His insightful analyses not only educate the public and policymakers about the implications of AI but also foster meaningful political dialogue and support the functioning of democratic institutions.

"We are proud to honor these exceptional leaders who are working tirelessly to ensure that AI development respects human rights and democratic principles," said Karine Caunes, Executive Director of CAIDP Europe. "Their contributions are vital in shaping a future where AI serves humanity and upholds the values we cherish."

The AI Policy Leader Awards highlight the importance of collaboration across sectors – government, academia, civil society, and business – to address the complex challenges posed by AI. By recognizing these leaders, the CAIDP Europe aims to inspire continued efforts towards ethical and responsible AI governance.
